About Justin:

While at UMF Justin Maurer began to seriously study nutrition and the benefits of eating fresh foods grown without herbicides and pesticides and artificial stimulation. He interned at The Fare Share Farm and Bakery in Canton while he worked evenings at The Boiler Room Restaurant in Wilton. It seemed natural to combine his interests in nutrition, local farming and locally owned restaurants to develop an annual fundraiser for the scholarship, and after several conversations with Rick Mealey, owner of The Boiler Room in Wilton, the idea grew into "Maurer Meals".

Justin's concept of community health was broad. Within his area of interest he was certainly concerned with the importance of nutrition and "eating healthy", of the importance of "keeping the money local", and of the importance of supporting our rural values. As he stated in one of his papers describing his efforts in helping develop farmer's markets, "People will get to know each other better and with any luck at all new friendships will develop".
